Writing: A work in progress

Things I used to think about when writing a first draft:

*Is this going to be 50,000 words? I need at least 50,000 words.
*Is there enough plot to keep things moving or do I need to add more stuff?
*Is this character even a character? Maybe she needs more traits.
*Would this character really do that? Maybe she should act differently there.
* This is boring, isn't it? No one will want to read this.

What I think about now when writing a first draft:

* Am i starting at the right spot? Is the first page compelling?
* If the character does X in Chapter 1, will that give her sufficient character ARC to carry her through the novel?
* Is the conflict both external and internal?
* Who is the audience? Is it the same audience as my debut?
* Are the stakes high enough?
* Is the tension steadily building, or am I meandering again?
* This is boring, isn't it? No one will want to read this.

Also, completely unrelated to the above: I had dinner with newport2newport, mindiscott , phoebe_k</lj> , and a couple others on Friday! It was such a blast to finally meet Melodye after years of talking in the blogosphere. I was 45 minutes late, and still we sat for over two hours and chatted, until I had to dash off. I could have sat there all night!

This one comes from Kieran Scott, author of I WAS A NON-BLONDE CHEERLEADER as well as GEEK MAGNET:
"Prada & Prejudice is the perfect mix of old-school style and modern day sass!"
