Mermaid Needs A Title.

Okay folks, I am going slowly insane by the fact that I don't have a title for my WIP. If you know one thing about me, its that I am title-obsessed. Often times I come up with the title prior to the book. Such was teh case with THE JETSETTERS SOCIAL CLUB, or GETTING CAUGHT.

So, here is the full synopsis for my mermaid fic. I'm currently callin git THE MERMAID'S CURSE, which I totally despise. Anyone have ideas?

Seventeen year old Lexi Wentworth is cursed. For as long as she can remember, she’s spent every night swimming. If she doesn’t, she’ll regret it—simply walking will be agony, as if she’s stepping on shattered glass. Her body craves the water, demands the water, until she can’t say no. At dawn each day she leaves and returns to school, where she’ll sit in calculus and history and English just like every other teenager in Lincoln City , Oregon . None of them have any idea that if they watched her swim, if they caught her at just the right angle, they’d see a flash of a tale, a glint of shimmering blue.

Its not the swimming that troubles Lexi. It’s the singing that goes with it. She’s not just a mermaid—she’s a siren, and her songs became a deadly lure when she turned fifteen. The first boy she killed was only sixteen years old when he walked straight into the ocean and drowned. Ever since, she avoids the popular shores of the Pacific in favor of a long forgotten lake up in the mountains, where she can swim and sing in peace, far from the population of her oceanside home.

Until, that is, Troy Mills discovers her lake. He’s new to Lincoln City High, and he doesn’t know about Lexi’s reputation as an ice queen—a reputation she’s carefully cultivated to keep everyone around her safe. He pushes her, talks to her, forces her to dream of what life could be like if she weren’t part mermaid, part siren.

Lexi can’t stop herself from warming to him, from falling for him. Soon, he’s demanding answers, following her to the lake, unknowingly risking his life. How can she keep him safe when the one thing she wants most--to hold him close-- will endanger his life?

I love the synopsis! Definitely something I'd want to read.
For a title, how about BENEATH THE WAVES?

Don't have any title ideas since I'm not much good at coming up with my own, but after reading that summary I really want to read the book now. It sounds like a great story idea.

Confessions of a Deadly Siren? The word "siren" in the title could be good.

I thought of something similar tothat, but I dont want people to confuse it with "The Secret Life of a Teenage Siren", a pulse book.

Ooh, this sounds really, really good.

What about A Mermaid's Tale? (kinda play on words?) i know it's stoopid...

I like Beneath the Waves

Or you could just call it Mermaid! (I stink at this..)

You could just call it SIREN. Or, there's a nice turn of phrase in the section of the Odyssey (Part 3, XII) when Odysseus and his crew are getting near to the sirens, A RIPPLE UPON THE WATER.

Love, love, LOVE this synopsis. I am no help with titles, as I stink at them. But I do like RIPPLE UPON THE WATER. Very lyrical.

I also suck at titles, but I really like A RIPPLE UPON THE WATER.

You could also play around with the word LURE and see where that takes you.

OK that synopsis sounds awesome.

But I have no ideas about a title. Maybe Secret Siren? No, that's too purple prosey. Man, I have no clue. I've never been great with titles.

Great synopsis. What about SONG OF THE SIREN; or MERMAID MUSIC (Can you tell I love alliterations?)or MERMAID MELODY or WATER SONGS

OMG that sounds amazing! I'm not great at titles but maybe SIREN SONG or LURE (since sirens lure their victims into the water)

STEPPING ON SHATTERED GLASS. You mention this analogy in your synopsis, which is compelling, BTW. Thanks for sharing.
Happy holidays!

Wow, this sounds great! I like the Beneath the Waves concept, but how about Beneath the Ice? As in you are going both "in the water" and the real girl underneath Lexi's "ice queen" persona. You might have to put something about ice in the plot then though for it to make sense. That could make a fun twist though... nervous that Troy will find her and hear her sing, Lexi goes higher into the mountains and starts hiding under ice to make extra sure he stays safe?? Or something like that... I also love the word "Lure" like bostonerin said. It sounds so lush and mysterious. Maybe something like alLure. A Lure? Naming books is fun! :) Too bad a book can only have one title...

Sounds great! As for titles, I'll throw out a few suggestions:

Lethal Lure
Song of Sorrow
Lexi's Lament
Rippling Secret
Rippling Curse
Lonely Secret
Lure of the Lake
Pitch of the Waves (for water AND music)
Tone Death (okay, that's more for a comedy but I couldn't resist)

Yeah, I think I'm done. ;-)

From others, I particularly like:

Beneath the Waves
Stepping on Shattered Glass
Song of the Siren
A Ripple Upon the Water
Lethal Lure
Song of Sorrow
Lure of the Lake
Pitch of the Waves
Beneath the Ice

And some of mine just for the fun of it:

- Beneath the Surface (this could be taken to mean beneath the surface of the water and beneath the reputation she's cultivated)
- A Glint of Shimmering Blue
- Off the Shores of the Pacific
- Behind these Lies
- Stop at the Water's Edge
- At Dawn Each Day (this one doesn't have much to do with the overall plot, but this stood out to me when I scanning your plot for another possible title)

Good luck with the writing and title choosing! It sounds like a really good idea! I usually don't like fantasy, but this sounds like one I'd really enjoy reading. Please post teasers! XP
