Thankful Thursday

For thankful thursday, I bring you the "things that have gone well for me in my road to publication" edition. Thats a mouthful.

1) I have an amazing agent. Zoe Fishman is the most amazing agent ever. 18 months ago we started with a completely different project, and she's probably put in hundreds of hours on my behalf-- and never once has she wanted to give it a rest. She believes in me and my work, and I'm so grateful for her that she deserves the #1 spot.

2) An editor wanted to buy my book. So did the other editors on her staff. They all loved it and were behind buying it. Publishing it. Ultimately as the story goes, it didn't sell to that editor... but it wasn't any fault of mine. At the time this was maddening, but now its kind of neat to think of. It ultimately got vetoed by a higher-up who felt they should not branch their YA program beyond multicultural and paranormal books-- which means it was rejected not becuase they didnt love my book, but because it didnt fit in their line.  But someone there believed it worthy of publication and tried to make my dream come true-- and was almost as heartbroken as I was when it didn't happen.

3)An editor once  told me my voice was "reminscent of Meg Cabot". Yeah, I'll take that.

4)My critique partners RULE. And one of them got her own deal, which is so mega-amazing I STILL Grin when I think of it.

5) I've met tons of great people. When i go to the YA section I can pull out a dozen books of people I "KNOW" and that's pretty amazing. And all of you support me and have helped me in this process. You're all made of awesome.

6) I've realized I WILL be published. I've come to the point where I'm mostly at piece with the process of writing and revising and submitting and maybe even being rejected, beucase it comes with the territory, and you have to see the whole picture. But I've realized that whether its this book or five books from now, I'll get published because i just wont give up learning and growing, and that means there will come a book that somone can't say no to. And for this mindset, I am thankful.

Wait, is #4 about me? Ha.

And #6 is the perfect attitude to have. I know it will happen, too.

My god, man. I can hardly believe it's been 18 months already. You and Zoe must have started working together right around the same time I was first starting to write THE FAKE MCCOY.

There's lots of good stuff on your list here, Mandy! :-)

P.S. The first part of this comment was just meant to be a reflection on how quickly time has passed for me. I could have sworn I'd read all about your "new" agent just last summer! But really, it would have been the summer before that!

Yep, it was Fall of 2006, crazy stuff. I signed my first agent in January 2006-- we'd started talking in November 2005! Two thousand-fricken-five! That sounds SOOO long ago.

I love to read inspirational posts like this. It's important to stay positive in this business. I always get a reality check when I walk in B&N and see all the books that have been written. It blows me away that I'm even in the running. Great attitude, great post!!

Go Mandy!
I love your attitude. Keep going, girl. Deb Caletti wrote five books before her first was published, and look how amazing and successful she is now. Your book will find a home, I'm sure. Keep going!
